Introducing… Seamus Nicolson. To celebrate our fourth birthday we’re putting on an exhibition that brings together a selection of professional artists we’ve worked with since we entered the Frome art scene in 2015. One such artist is Seamus Nicolson.
Seamus Nicolson’s photographic work represents the everyday, celebrating the over-looked and ignored in London’s urban environment, and more recently the rural backlanes and locales of Somerset.
“I came to photography from a background in Fine Art, having started my training as a painter. I feel that I am still trying to paint but with another medium. The way I conceive and construct images is more informed by art history and cinematography than the traditions of documentary photography. The creative act can be encapsulated in the decisive moment, but it can can also occur when an event is seen, re-imagined and re-made.”
Born in London in 1971, Seamus Nicolson graduated from the Royal College of Art MA Photography in 1996. The following year he was selected for the survey show of recent graduates, the New Contemporaries at the Camden Art Centre. Since then he has exhibited nationally and internationally and has work in private and public collections such as the Tate, the Government Art Collection and the Arts Council. Nicolson has also worked commercially shooting editorial portraits and fashion, most notably two advertising campaigns for Vivienne Westwood. Nicolson is now based in Frome, Somerset, producing a new body of work concerned with landscape and pyschological space.
We printed and framed all the works in Seamus’ 2017 show at Black Swan Arts, From The Corner of My Eye, and designed the event invitation.
