Introducing… Nicky Knowles. To celebrate our fourth birthday we’re putting on an exhibition that brings together a selection of professional artists we’ve worked with since we entered the Frome art scene in 2015. One such artist is Nicky Knowles.
Nicky Knowles is best known for her expressive collages. “My collages explore a dialogue between paint and paper. They reflect a process of lyrical play with cut and torn forms from new and heavily worked materials which I distress using wax and paint. I love the process of distressing the paper and canvas before I start to collage and then incorporating these historic materials alongside new paper or a cleanly painted surface. There is a tension between the new and the old and the balancing of the shapes that I find endlessly fascinating,” she says. In 2018 she became an RWA academician.
Aside from her collages Nicky is also an illustrator working in pen, ink and charcoal on board or paper. Her main subject matter for her illustrations are British insects such as bees, moths and butterflies.
We frame Nicky’s illustrations, some of which are currently showing at SEED on Catherine Hill, as well as various pop-ups (see her Instagram page for details: https://www.instagram.com/nickyknowlesillustrations/) We’ll be showing one of her moths at To The Fore.
Nicky is based in Frome. Visit her website. https://www.nickyknowlesart.com/
