Every day during Advent 2015 we’ll feature a different South West artist. We’ve framed, printed or exhibited the artists featured in Advent Artists.
21st December: Seamus Nicholson
Since leaving the Royal College of Art, Seamus Seamus Nicolson has been working as an exhibiting artist and commercial photographer. His work balances the surreal or extraordinary with everyday or banal experiences. Seamus’s photographs combine narrative staged photography with snapshot documentary aesthetics. As such, Seamus is influenced by cinema and traditional tableaux painting.
Seamus has work in National collections, such as the Tate, the Arts Council, and the Government Art Collection. He’s exhibited across Europe, including solo shows in Holland, Hamburg, London and Turin, and group exhibitions at Tate Britain, Whitechapel Gallery, Tate Liverpool and various galleries across the world including in New York, Italy, Germany, and Frome.
Seamus won The Black Swan Open prize at this year’s Black Swan Open, which will lead to a solo exhibition at the Black Swan next year. Seamus’s current work explores the overlap between art, portraiture, documentary and fashion photography.
Mount’s framemaker, Simon, first learnt how to frame when studying photography at the Arts University at Bournemouth, giving him a strong background in framing photographs.
