Every day during Advent 2015 we’ll feature a different South West artist. We’ve framed, printed or exhibited the artists featured in Advent Artists.
9th December: Paul Newman
Paul Newman is a graphic fine artist working exclusively in graphite. His practice incorporates walking, close observation and research. Paul is known for his highly detailed renditions of natural forms and landscapes, as well as depictions of churches and ruined buildings. He’s exhibited at the Royal West of England Academy and with the Society of Graphic Fine Art in London as well as recently being selected for the 2015 Evolver Prize.
Paul’s drawings are made using a variety of grades of Daler Rowney Derwent pencil. Soft tones are continually blended and overlaid and built up in layers. No erasers are used other than in the under-drawing stage, which can take several hours to complete. Paul make sketches and observations whilst out walking and uses photography as another tool to develop ideas, working on the final piece when back in the studio.
Paul worked for a short time at Mount, so is now an expert about the importance of framing artwork!

Before we moved to Frome, Mount had a gallery in Dorset (The Old Print Room) that showed Paul’s first solo show, Netted in a Silver Mist.

Paul currently has an open studio at the Black Swan. To find out more, visit his website
