Every day during Advent 2015 we’ll feature a different South West artist. We’ve framed, printed or exhibited the artists featured in Advent Artists.
10th December: Design
Advent Artists is primarily about visual artists, but we’re making an exception for Design, a 3-piece band comprising of Simon Barber (Evolver, The Chesterfields), Helen Stickland and Rob Parry. Design is more than a music-project, it is a creative venture: aural, visual, conceptual.
Design released their latest record Black Marker, Red Marker in September. Simon Barber explained to us that he wanted the launch to be somewhere between a party, a private view and a performance. He definitely achieved all of those things with the amazing launch. The venue was at OSR projects, an innovative arts space in West Coker founded by Simon Lee Dicker and Chantelle Henocq. The art-space setting combined with the decoration and curation of the space gave the launch the feel of a performance in the visual arts sense.
Mount printed and stretched a series of small and medium canvases that served both as decoration for the venue, and as limited edition artworks to buy. The band employed a 7ft bouncer to greet guests, and guitarist James Thornton set the mood with a background solo. There were Design-branded cans of mystery foodstuffs, Design-branded cupcakes and t-shirts. All in all, the launch was an awesome sensory experience that had me coming away from it with the same buzz I get from engaging art exhibitions.
Oh, and the music is pretty good too!
